Why Is My Electricity Bill So High?

In a tropical household, one appliance accounts for more electricity than everything else combined. Here's how to confirm it's the culprit and what to do about it.

Start here: aircon is almost certainly the main driver

Singapore's Energy Market Authority data shows that air conditioning accounts for 25–40% of a typical household's electricity use — and that's averaged across all households. For a family running two or three bedroom units every night, it can easily be 50–60% of the total bill. The water heater is the second-largest item, at roughly 15–25%. Everything else — fridge, lights, TV, phone chargers — fills in the remaining fraction.

This ordering matters enormously for where to focus. Switching from incandescent to LED lighting saves perhaps 3–5% of your total bill. Fixing your aircon habits can save 20–50% of it. Start with the biggest item first.

How to confirm aircon is the problem

Your electricity bill shows total kWh consumed. The simplest diagnostic is to compare two months: one where you used aircon heavily, one where you used it less (a holiday away, or a cooler period). If the kWh swings significantly, aircon is confirmed as the driver. If kWh is roughly the same but the dollar amount went up, check your utility's announced tariff for that period — it may be a rate increase, not a usage problem.

The four most common causes of a sudden increase

1. A new usage pattern. Running the aircon one extra hour per night adds roughly 30–50 kWh per month per unit. Over a three-bedroom home, that's 90–150 extra kWh — immediately visible on the bill.

2. A lower temperature setting. Each degree below 24°C increases the compressor's workload and your energy use by roughly 6–10%. Dropping from 24°C to 18°C — a common mistake — can increase aircon costs by 36–60% for that unit.

3. A clogged filter. A dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing the compressor to run harder and longer. Cleaning it takes 10 minutes and can restore efficiency immediately. See our filter cleaning guide.

4. A refrigerant issue or aging unit. If a unit needs to run significantly longer than usual to achieve the same comfort, it may have reduced refrigerant (a job for a technician) or simply be aging. Units more than 10–12 years old often run noticeably less efficiently than their original specification.

Quick reality check: if your aircon is set below 22°C and the room still doesn't feel cold enough within 30 minutes, the problem is almost certainly not the setpoint — it's the unit's efficiency. Call a technician rather than dropping the temperature further.
