How to Clean Your Aircon Filter

A clogged filter can increase energy use by up to 30%. This is the highest-impact maintenance task you can do yourself in 10 minutes, with no tools.

Why it matters so much

The filter's job is to stop dust and particles from accumulating on the evaporator coil behind it. A light coating of dust has minimal effect. But in tropical climates — where humidity causes dust to clump and stick — a neglected filter can restrict airflow so severely that the coil partially freezes, the compressor runs continuously, and energy consumption rises by 20–30% versus a clean unit. In extreme cases the coil freezes solid and the unit stops cooling entirely.

How to clean it: step by step

Step 1 — Turn off the unit. Remote off and wall switch if accessible. Do not remove the filter while running.

Step 2 — Open the front panel. On most residential split-system units, the entire front panel swings upward, revealing the filter. No screwdrivers needed. If yours requires tools, check your manual first.

Step 3 — Slide out the filter panels. They typically slide out from both sides. Note which side faces out before removing — they're usually symmetrical, but not always.

Step 4 — Rinse under running water. Hold the filter under a gentle stream, rinsing from the inner (coil) side outward, pushing debris the way it came from. A soft brush handles heavier buildup. Avoid high-pressure water or harsh cleaners — the mesh is delicate.

Step 5 — Let it dry completely. Shake off excess water and leave in a shaded, ventilated spot for at least 30 minutes. A wet filter reinstalled into a running unit can cause moisture problems on the coil.

Step 6 — Reinstall and test. Slide back into place, close the panel, run the unit. Improved airflow is usually noticeable immediately.

When to call a technician instead: if the unit is still not cooling well after filter cleaning, the problem is likely the coil (a "chemical wash" service), the refrigerant level, or the fan motor. Those require a professional. Monthly filter cleaning is a DIY task; annual or biannual professional servicing is a separate job.

How often?

In tropical climates with high humidity and air pollution, monthly is the realistic interval for homes where the unit runs nightly. Manufacturer guidance often says "every two weeks to a month."
