Can Aircon Prevent Mould on Leather and Clothes?

Yes, in the open room — with one honest caveat about anything stored in a closed wardrobe or dust bag. Here's the actual humidity thresholds involved.

This applies across the tropics: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Mumbai, and other humid-climate cities — the mechanism is a fixed biological threshold, not something that varies by geography.

The threshold that actually matters

Mould doesn't grow at any humidity — it needs the air to be wet enough for long enough. A frequently-cited historical study on mould and relative humidity found no mould growth on leather at 60% relative humidity, but mildew requiring a minimum of roughly 72.8% RH to germinate, with heavy growth once humidity reached 95%. General home-storage guidance recommends keeping stored leather goods at 45–55% relative humidity as a comfortable safety margin below that.

Where dry mode fits

Dry mode typically brings room humidity down to roughly 50–60% — comfortably under the germination threshold, with some margin to spare. Singapore's ambient outdoor humidity regularly runs 80–95%, so a room actively running dry mode is a meaningfully different environment than the tropical air outside it.

The caveat, not hidden: enclosed wardrobes, dust bags, and shoe boxes trap humidity and don't benefit from the room's air as directly — they can sit at a higher RH than the open room around them, especially with limited airflow. Dry mode helps the room; it doesn't automatically reach into every closed container inside it. Leaving wardrobe doors slightly open, or using silica gel packets inside enclosed storage, addresses the gap dry mode alone doesn't cover.

Worth knowing, not the headline

This is a genuine bonus of running dry mode (see our Dry Mode savings article) — not a reason to run it on its own. The energy savings and the mould protection come from the same mechanism, so if you're already running dry mode for the electricity savings, this is a genuine side benefit rather than a separate decision to make.
