Does Dry Mode Really Save Electricity?

Yes — typically 20 to 50 percent less power than Cool mode, for a genuine physical reason, not a marketing claim. Here's how it actually works, and one real caveat about the temperature setting most people don't know about.

This applies across the tropics: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Mumbai, and other humid-climate cities — the mechanism is physics, not geography.

Why dry mode uses less power

Cool mode runs the compressor continuously, working to hit and hold a specific temperature. Dry mode has a different job: removing moisture from the air, not chasing a temperature target. To do that, it runs the compressor and fan at reduced, cycling capacity rather than full continuous operation. Less compressor work means less electricity — HVAC industry guidance puts the difference at roughly 20 to 50 percent less power than running Cool mode for the same period.

The one-button interaction, across almost every brand

Dry mode isn't a premium or smart-only feature — it's a standard mode on virtually every split-system air conditioner, reached the same way regardless of brand. Most remotes use a single shared "Mode" button that cycles through Cool, Dry, Fan, and Auto (and sometimes Heat); pressing it once or twice from Cool typically lands on Dry, marked with a water-droplet icon. This holds across global brands like Daikin, LG, Samsung, and Panasonic, and — checking against actual manuals — regional brands too, including Voltas and Blue Star, two of the dominant brands across India and neighbouring markets.

The temperature setting most people don't expect

Here's the detail worth knowing before you try it: on many units, dry mode locks the temperature at a fixed setting — often around 24°C — and there's no way to adjust it. Voltas's own remote documentation states this plainly for their units. This isn't a flaw; it's simply how the mode is designed to work on most hardware. A smaller number of units, including some higher-end Gree models, do let you adjust the dry-mode temperature yourself.

What this means in practice: if you press Dry and the displayed temperature doesn't change no matter what you do, that's very likely how your unit is designed to work — not a fault. Check your remote's manual if you want to confirm which category your unit falls into.

Does it actually cool the room?

Yes, just more gradually than Cool mode. Dry mode works best in a room that's already close to a comfortable temperature — it's designed to maintain comfort while managing humidity, not to rapidly pull down a hot room from scratch. A common recommendation from HVAC sources is to use Cool mode first to bring the room down, then switch to Dry mode to maintain it — though real-world experience suggests many rooms handle Dry mode fine from a warmer start too. Worth testing in your own space rather than assuming either way.

A bonus that has nothing to do with your electricity bill

Lower humidity doesn't just save power — it also helps protect leather goods and clothing in cabinets from mould. One historical study, cited in mould-science literature, found no mould growth on leather at 60% relative humidity, but mildew requiring at least 72.8% RH to germinate, with heavy growth by 95% RH. Dry mode typically brings room humidity down to around 50–60%, comfortably below that germination threshold. Enclosed wardrobes and dust bags can still trap higher humidity than the open room, so this is a helpful effect, not a guarantee.
